Phonics and Early Reading

Phonics and Early Reading

At Northwood Park Primary, Phonics plays an integral part in our teaching of reading. It teaches our children to become fluent readers from an early stage. To achieve this, we use the Little Wandle Letters and Sound Revised scheme in EYFS and KS1, which is a systematic and synthetic phonics programme, starting as soon as they begin their journey with us in Reception. This programme supports children to recognise all 44 sounds within the alphabetical code and ensures children master the skills they need to read and spell as they move through the school.

Phonics is a huge priority within EYFS and KS1, therefore, lessons are taught for 30 minutes at the beginning of each school day, and additional intervention are taken when necessary to fill gaps within the children's phonetic knowledge.
Children are expected to complete phases 2, 3 and 4 in Reception, Phase 5 in Year 1 and a spelling scheme in Year 2 which is where they will complete the programme. We continue to use Little Wandle Letters and Sounds keep up sessions for those who benefit in KS2.

All children within these Year groups will complete half-termly assessments to ensure that they are making steady progress. Following on from these assessments, children will be sent home with a fully decodable book which matches what they are able to read.
