At Northwood Park Primary, our EYFS curriculum is rooted in our core values:
Be Kind. Be Brave. Be Proud. We provide a clear, ambitious and inclusive curriculum that nurtures children’s curiosity, creativity and love of learning through meaningful first-hand experiences. We recognise that children join our school with a wide range of starting points, often significantly below age related expectations, particularly in communication and language, personal development and understanding of the wider world. Our curriculum is therefore carefully designed to develop vocabulary, build cultural capital and provide the foundations for future learning.
At Northwood Park, we understand that children learn best through play, exploration and active engagement. Through a balance of adult-led and child-initiated learning opportunities, children develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to become successful learners. We place a strong emphasis on communication and language, early reading and personal, social and emotional development to ensure that all children make strong progress from their starting points.
EYFS at Northwood Park
A key priority within our EYFS curriculum is our Golden Thread of Reading. High-quality texts are at the heart of learning, exposing children to rich vocabulary, meaningful discussions and a range of experiences beyond their everyday lives. Storytelling, rhymes, songs and nursery rhymes are intertwined throughout the curriculum to develop a love of reading and support language acquisition.
We are committed to ensuring that all children, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), can access a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum. Learning is carefully adapted through high-quality teaching, targeted interventions, visual supports, adapted resources and personalised provision to enable every child to achieve their full potential. Strong partnerships with families and external agencies ensure that children's individual needs are identified early and supported effectively.
Learning is carefully planned across all seven areas of learning and is enriched through a range of practical experiences, visitors and educational visits. Children have opportunities to learn beyond the classroom through visits to Kingswood, St Mary's Church, Lower Drayton Farm and the local Fire Station. These real-life experiences help children make meaningful connections with their learning, develop their understanding of the world and build lasting memories.
Forest School is an integral part of our EYFS provision, providing children with regular opportunities to learn in the natural environment. Through exploration, problem-solving, risk taking and hands on experiences, children develop confidence, resilience, independence and a sense of responsibility for the world around them. Forest School supports physical development, communication and language, personal and social skills, and promotes positive wellbeing and mental health.
Within the Prime Areas, children develop strong relationships, communication skills, independence and resilience. Through structured interactions, play-based learning and a nurturing environment, children learn to manage their feelings, build friendships and develop positive attitudes towards learning.
Within the Specific Areas, children explore literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and expressive arts and design through engaging topics and hands-on experiences. They investigate seasonal changes, learn about different people, communities and celebrations, develop early mathematical reasoning and express themselves creatively through art, music, dance and role play.
Our curriculum celebrates the diverse backgrounds, cultures and experiences of our school community. Children learn about similarities and differences between themselves and others, developing respect, kindness and understanding from an early age.
Through our EYFS curriculum, we intend for all children to leave Reception as confident, independent and enthusiastic learners who embody our values to Be Kind, Be Brave and Be Proud. They will be equipped with the knowledge, skills and positive attitudes needed for a successful transition into Key Stage One and their future learning journey.
