At Northwood Park Primary, we are committed to preparing pupils for life beyond primary school. Mathematics is central to this vision, enabling children to become confident, resilient and successful learners. Our curriculum is underpinned by principles of the Early Years Framework and the National Curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2, providing pupils with opportunities to develop fluency, curiosity and the ability to apply their knowledge to a range of contexts.
Our Mathematics curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure a coherent progression of knowledge and skills. White Rose Maths is used as an integral part of our curriculum, providing carefully sequenced resources that support pupils in developing fluency, reasoning and problem-solving while securing deep and connected mathematical understanding.
Maths at Northwood Park
Through this cohesive approach pupils build on prior learning and deepen their understanding over time. This ensures that all learners develop the confidence to approach Mathematics independently and apply their skills across the wider curriculum. Mathematical vocabulary is explicitly taught throughout lessons to support pupils in communicating their thinking clearly and confidently. Mathematical language is explicitly taught and consistently modelled by staff. Opportunities for purposeful discussion are embedded within lessons to develop pupils’ reasoning and oracy skills. Pupils are encouraged to use mathematical vocabulary to explain and justify their thinking. Lessons follow a structured ‘I do, We do, You do’ approach, incorporating a balance of whole-class teaching, shared practice and independent application.
We are committed to ensuring that all pupils, including those with SEND, achieve in Mathematics. Pupils are supported through adaptive teaching, targeted interventions and the use of appropriate resources. High expectations are maintained for all pupils, enabling them to access an ambitious mathematics curriculum from their individual starting points, make progress and develop a lasting mathematical understanding.
EYFS
In Early Years, we recognise that children develop at different rates. Practitioners provide high-quality interactions and enabling environments that support the development of early mathematical understanding. Pupils are given opportunities to develop their skills in counting, number recognition, early calculation, and an understanding of shape, space and measure.
KS1
In Key Stage One, pupils continue to develop a strong foundation in their mathematical understanding. They gain fluency in number and place value, learning to count, represent, compare and manipulate numbers more confidently. Pupils develop secure calculation skills through Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division in practical contexts. They also begin to explore Fractions, Measurement, Geometry and Statistics. Through carefully sequenced learning, children use concrete and pictorial representations to deepen their conceptual understanding, explain their reasoning and solving problems.
KS2
In Key Stage Two, Pupils deepen their understanding of number and calculation, developing fluency with the four operations, Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. They apply mathematical knowledge across Geometry, Measurement, Statistics, Ratio and Algebra, while strengthening their reasoning and problem-solving skills. Pupils are encouraged to justify their thinking, make connections between concepts and confidently tackle increasingly complex mathematical challenges.
We place a strong emphasis on the development of number sense as a foundational skill that underpins all areas of Mathematics, enabling pupils to develop fluency, reason mathematically and solve problems with confidence. Number Sense is a structured programme that supports pupils in developing secure understanding of number relationships and efficient calculation strategies, building the strong foundations required for mathematical fluency and confidence.
Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) is used to complement Number Sense and support the development of rapid recall and fluency in multiplication and division facts thus enabling pupils to apply their knowledge confidently both inside and outside school. We believe that TTRS encourages regular practice, promotes pupil engagement and helps secure the automaticity required for efficient mathematical reasoning and problem-solving.
At Northwood Park, we want all pupils to enjoy Mathematics, foster a positive attitude towards the subject and develop the confidence to succeed. We integrate Mathematics into outdoor learning opportunities, including Forest School, and celebrate the subject through events such as Number Day, Bullseye Maths and National Numeracy Day. These celebrations provide opportunities for pupils to engage in mathematical investigations, explore the achievements of inspirational Maths role models and participate in activities that promote curiosity and enjoyment. Further enrichment is offered through lunchtime clubs featuring times tables, puzzles, card games and chess. Together, these experiences foster fluency, resilience and problem-solving while encouraging pupils to be proud of their achievements, brave in their learning and kind in their collaboration with others.
